The James Cleaver Quintet
The first time I witnessed 'the James Cleaver Quintet' (JCQ) live, bassist Jimmy Diego threw his solid Fender Jazz bass 3 feet into the air and caught it with his face, breaking his nose. This is the kind of behaviour I have come to expect from the Eastbourne based quartet, completed by Jack Swagger, Maud E Licious and Alan Skarrington.
If you were to ask The James Cleaver Quintet how they met, they would tell you that it was at a Chris Eubank convention in Hull and how it was a love of good quality profiteroles and fresh water fish (particularly Sturgeons) that brought them together. They will continue to explain how they started off as an N-Dubz cover band, playing all the hits from "Papa Can You Hear Me?" to "Better Not Waste My Time" and back again, but cranking things up a notch by throwing a Bulgarian folk twist into the mix.
'10 stages of a make up' is the first ever release by these four strangely compelling young men despite the fact that they have been playing under 'the JCQ' moniker for several years. Recorded, Produced and Mixed by the band themselves, '10 stages of a make up' is a gritty exercise in chaotic punk songs with an unusual commercial edge.
To reiterate, The James Cleaver Quintet must not be allowed to get in the way of the bigger question: why are we here? They enlighten our lives daily, they brought up a generation and in conclusion, The James Cleaver Quintet truly is, The James Cleaver Quintet.
